Lefkas, the 'white island' takes its name from the dramatic white cliffs of the west coast and is the 4th largest island of the Ionian chain. Separated from the mainland by a canal excavated by the Corinthians, the connection has been re-established with an efficient swing bridge that allows Lefkas to continue enjoying an island atmosphere whilst still providing easy access to some of the most beautiful parts of the mainland. Recognised as one of the windsurfing capitals of Europe, Vassiliki hosts the World Windsurfing Championships. Lefkas is also the main yachting destination of the Ionian and the assembly point for one of the biggest yachting events in the Mediterranean, the annual regatta.
